last week I went to Samuel Foso's expo.He's is currently presenting an expo at the MEP (Maison Européenne de la Photographie) in the famous district of the marais.
Very interesting to discover the carrer of photographer whom started as a young child having his own Photo studio at the age of 13 until becoming the recognised Central Africa's leading contemporary artists
La semaine dernière je suis allée à l'expo de Samuel Foso. Il présente actuellement une expo à la MEP (Maison Européenne de Photographie) dans le célèbre quartier du marais. Très intéressant de découvrir la carrière d'une femme photographe qui a commencé dès son plus jeune âge à avoir son propre studio photo à l'âge de 13 ans jusqu'à devenir l'un des principaux artistes contemporains reconnus d'Afrique centrale.

Samuel Fosso (born July 17, 1962) is a Cameroonian-born Nigerian photographer who has worked for most of his career in the Central African Republic. His work includes using self-portraits adopting a series of personas, often commenting on the history of Africa. One of his most famous works of art, and what he is best known for, is his "autoportraits" where he takes either himself or other more recognizable people and draws them in a style of popular culture or politics.[
Samuel Fosso (né le 17 juillet 1962) est un photographe nigérian d'origine camerounaise qui a travaillé la majeure partie de sa carrière en République centrafricaine. Son travail comprend l'utilisation d'autoportraits adoptant une série de personnages, commentant souvent l'histoire de l'Afrique. L'une de ses œuvres d'art les plus célèbres, et ce pour quoi il est le plus connu, est ses "autoportraits" où il se prend lui-même ou d'autres personnes plus reconnaissables et les dessine dans un style de culture populaire ou de politique.
Le style de Fosso est quelque peu comparable à celui de Diane Arbus, dans la mesure où ses autoportraits montrent un aperçu de notre propre humanité. On a dit que la photographie d'Arbus montrait que chacun a sa propre identité, c'est-à-dire ce qui reste quand on enlève le reste. En revanche, les costumes variés de Fosso montreraient que l'identité est également déterminée en partie par des choses sur lesquelles les humains n'ont aucun contrôle. Son travail a donc également été caractérisé comme révélant comment les humains peuvent en fait créer leur propre identité.
Fosso's style is somewhat comparable with that of Diane Arbus, in that his self-portraits show a glimpse of our own humanity. Arbus's photography has been said to show that everyone has their own identity, that is to say what remains when we take away the rest. In contrast Fosso's varying costumes are said to show that identity is determined partly as well by things over which humans lack control. His work has therefore also been characterized as having a disclosure of how humans can in fact create their own identity.
