En recherchant les acteurs majeurs de la scène de l'art Africain Contemporain,
je retrouve souvent cette fameuse exposition "Les Magiciens de la Terre".
C'est en m'informant d'avantage que je découvre une merveille.
Sans comprendre comment je n'ai pas pu entendre parler de cette exposition/institution avant, je découvre un événement culte qui à littéralement redonné le La dans le monde de l'art contemporain il y a plus de 30 ans. La même année que la chute du mur de Berlin et que les manifestations de Tian'anmen. Cette exposition est si importante qu'en 2014 parait la republication du catalogue de l'exposition initial.

By looking for the major players in the contemporary African art scene, I often fall across this famous exhibition called "The Magicians of the Earth". It with more research that I discover a wonder. Without understanding how I was not able to hear about this exhibition / institution before, I discover a Mythical event that literally gave life back to the world of Contemporary Art more than 30 years ago. The same year as the fall of the Berlin Wall and the Tian'anmen protests. This exhibition is so important that in 2014 appears the republication of the catalog of the initial exhibition. Installée sur deux sites, au Centre Georges Pompidou et à la Grande Halle de la Villette, l'exposition internationale d’art contemporain Les magiciens de la Terre présente 100 artistes contemporains, 50 de pays occidentalisés, 50 de pays non occidentalisés.
Toutes les œuvres sont sélectionnées sur les mêmes critères, en fonction, entre autres, de leur ancrage dans l’espace et le temps.
Installed on two sites, at the Center Georges Pompidou and at the Grande Halle de la Villette, the international exhibition of contemporary art "Les magiciens de la Terre" presents 100 contemporary artists, 50 from Westernized countries, 50 from non-Westernized countries. All the works are selected on the same criteria, depending, among other things, on their anchoring in space and time.
À la différence de l’exposition de 1984 « Primitivism in Twentieth Century Art : Affinity of the Tribal and the Modern », et pour la première fois, l’art des sociétés occidentalisées n’est pas mis face à l’art du reste du monde avec l’objectif de faire un parallèle, de les opposer, mais au contraire avec l’envie de tout regrouper ensemble, comme provenant de la même branche d’art, ce qui permet la vision d’œuvres extrêmement diversifiées. Cette exposition annonce une nouvelle approche de l’histoire de l’art. Elle montre aux pays occidentalisés que l’art contemporain existe en dehors de l’occident. D’un coup, une prise de conscience, et cet art-là devient identifiable, trouvable.
Unlike the 1984 exhibition "Primitivism in Twentieth Century Art: Affinity of the Tribal and the Modern", and for the first time, the art of Westernized societies is not confronted with the art of the rest of the world. world with the objective of drawing a parallel, of opposing them, but on the contrary with the desire to group everything together, as if coming from the same branch of art, which allows the vision of extremely diverse works. Un ouvrage, édité à l'occasion des vingt-cinq ans de Magiciens de la terre, est un formidable témoignage de ce qu'a été réellement cette exposition si largement commentée dans le monde entier et qui a représenté un tournant dans l'histoire de l'art. Ce beau-livre propose, pour la première fois, une vue complète de la scénographie de 1989 dans les deux lieux, le Centre Pompidou et La Grande Halle de la Villette, à travers plus de 410 photographies inédites, et des témoignages d'artistes tels que Alfredo Jaar, Francesco Clemente, Ilya Kabakov, Chéri Samba...
Dans une deuxième partie, la parole est donnée aux acteurs de l'époque : Mark Francis, André Magnin et Aline Luque, commissaires associés, et Hou Hanru, témoin privilégié de la découverte des artistes chinois. La démarche de Jean-Hubert Martin, commissaire de l'exposition, est éclairée par un texte de Raymonde Moulin et une mise en perspective d'Annie Cohen-Solal.

A book, published on the occasion of the twenty-five years of Magicians of the Earth, is a wonderful testimony to what this exhibition, so widely commented on around the world, and which represented a turning point in the history of art. This beautiful book offers, for the first time, a complete view of the scenography of 1989 in the two places, the Center Pompidou and La Grande Halle de la Villette, through more than 410 unpublished photographs, and testimonies of artists such that Alfredo Jaar, Francesco Clemente, Ilya Kabakov, Chéri Samba ... In a second part, the word is given to the actors of the time: Mark Francis, André Magnin and Aline Luque, associate curators, and Hou Hanru, privileged witness of the discovery of Chinese artists. Jean-Hubert Martin's approach, curator of the exhibition, is illuminated by a text by Raymonde Moulin and a perspective by Annie Cohen-Solal.
