Amoako Boafo
Sa vocation artistique a du mal à s'épanouir au Ghana jusqu’à ce qu’un bienfaiteur finance son inscription dans une école d’art, d’abord à Accra, puis en 2013 à Vienne, où il réside depuis lors. Tout comme l’artiste afro-américain Kehinde Wiley ou la Britannique d’origine ghanéenne Lynette Yiadom-Boakye, il veut mettre les Noirs et leur dignité au premier plan de son art. S’emparant de la technique de grands maîtres occidentaux, comme la ligne sinueuse de l’Autrichien Egon Schiele, même si on le compare plus à Kees van Dongen, il veut « décoder les nuances de la couleur de la peau » dans ses portraits. la vente du soir d'art contemporain et du XXe siècle de Phillips va commencer. Dans le catalogue figure l'œuvre The Lemon Bathing Suit, une huile sur toile d'Amoako Boafo, de 2019. Le collectionneur Stefan Simchowitz l'avait achetée pour 22 500 dollars à Jeffrey Deitch avec la promesse de la garder dans sa collection personnelle, mais peu après, flairant une bonne affaire, a décidé de la proposer aux enchères chez Phillips. L'œuvre, alors estimée entre 40 000 et 65 000 dollars, atteint 880 971 dollars (802 575 euros). C’est un jeune collectionneur londonien, Ari Rothstein, qui l'a achetée pour le compte d'un client : Amoako Boafo. Et là, la boucle est bouclée. Ou presque.
Boafo, voyant la valeur de ses œuvres sur le marché s'envoler, cherche à prendre le contrôle de sa cote dès le départ. Pour ce faire, il passe un accord avec Ari Rothstein et son partenaire commercial Raphael Held : comme il n'a pas assez d'argent pour acheter l’œuvre lui-même, il promet aux deux marchands de créer pour eux des œuvres d'art d'une valeur de 480 000 dollars, une grande et deux moyennes : Self Portrait (2019) et Untitled (2019) seront vendus chez Sotheby's entre mai et juin et Untitled (2019) chez Phillips en juillet, pour un total combiné de 664 000 dollars.

Le calme
« Quand les choses se seront calmées, je tournerai la page sur tous ceux qui pensent pouvoir m’entuber. Tu ne peux pas me dire que tu veux une œuvre pour toi et ensuite la vendre. Boafo, rentré au Ghana pour travailler pendant le confinement, a dit vouloir faire beaucoup plus attention aux personnes avec lesquelles il travaille ou auxquelles il vend des œuvres.
